It’s been the 50th Anniversary of the longest running and most prestigious professional surf contest, The Rip Curl Pro, held at the iconic Bells Beach over the Easter weekend and through to April 30th. And with King Kelly in town for the showdown, there has been alot of talk about the great man and his place in the world of surfing after he successfully took out his 10th World Surfing Title earlier this year.
He has been dominating the sport for the better part of two decades and every time he paddles out he just seems to get better and better. Who knows where surfing would be without him … he has definitely bought surf culture to the mainstream and driven its popularity through the roof. Continually the crowd favourite, regardless of whichever break he is surfing in whatever part of the world, and without sounding like a total cliche, I have never heard a truer word spoken about him than when I hear reporters say – men want to be like him and women just want to be with him. Amen to that.
So, the question has been posed, Is Kelly Slater the greatest athlete of our time? Or ever for that matter?
For me … a thousand times yes. I can’t think of another athlete that has had a career that spans as long as his, with as many titles to their name. Oh and not to mention the string of uber babes he has dated… Gisele Bundchen, Cameron Diaz and Pammy. Plus he looks pretty damn stealth in a pair of boardies. No wonder men want to be him.
So with that said, all hail King Kelly.
Peace & K.K
